The Scrap Master's Guide to Maximizing Your Payouts:

Knowing the prices is just the beginning. To truly be a Scrap Master and get top dollar in Philadelphia, follow these golden rules:

  1. SORT, SORT, SORT! Never bring a mixed load. Separate your ferrous (magnetic: iron, steel) from your non-ferrous (non-magnetic: copper, aluminum, brass). Then, separate all your non-ferrous metals by type. This is the single biggest factor in increasing your payout.

  2. CLEAN IS KING! Remove all non-metal contaminants – plastic, wood, rubber, excessive dirt, even paint – from your metal. "Clean" scrap commands significantly higher prices.

  3. CALL AHEAD! Prices fluctuate daily. Before you make that trip to the scrap yard, call them or check their specific website for their exact prices today. Compare a few local Philadelphia yards if you have large volumes.

  4. KNOW YOUR GRADES! Especially for copper and insulated wire. That little bit of extra effort to strip insulation from thick copper wire can turn cents into dollars per pound.

  5. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS! Be friendly, consistent, and professional with yard staff. Good relationships can lead to better service and sometimes even better rates for loyal customers.
